In India, for getting admission to a doctoral or PHD program, a Masters degree is required. Further, doing a Masters in Philosophy (M.Phil) is also mandatory to start a PhD in some subjects. For funding/fellowship interested candidates are required to qualify ‘National Eligibility Test for Lectureship and Junior Research fellowship (NET for LS and JRF). NET is conducted by 'Council of Scientific and Industrial Research'(CSIR) and ‘University Grants Commission'(UGC).
In accordance with the new rules which have come in the past few years, the entrance exam conducted by most of the universities is in general ability and the selected subject. Once a person clears these tests, he/she has to then appear for an interview by the available supervisor / guide.
The students are also required to give presentations of the research proposal at the starting, then they have to submit progress reports, give pre-submission presentation and finally defend the thesis in an open defence viva voce.
